Holistic health is about creating health from the inside out and includes mental, physical and emotional well-being. Health, as with every area of life, starts in the mind and manifests in the physical.
It requires a fine balance of clear mindset, nutritious diet, exercise, hormonal balance, metabolism, coping with stress, emotional equilibrium and clear thinking. Here we are concerned with developing a healthy eating mindset, an attitude of relish for fresh and healthy food will make healthy eating a joy for the physical body.
When you eat, eat with awareness of what you are consuming. Cravings for fatty, unhealthy food originate from a desire for comfort and probably demonstrate an emotional need that longs to be assuaged quickly. Binge eating or eating unconsciously or with indifference about effect this food will have on your body will only lead to frustration and lethargy. Eating while absorbed in a television movie is an example of how one can eat and be quite unaware or uncaring of how much and what quality of food you are ingesting.
In all we do, whether eating, drinking, walking, exercising or even resting, when we do it mindfully, the benefits will escalate way beyond doing so in an indifferent or unaware state. This conscious focus must characterize all our thoughts and actions if we are to live intentionally and be a winner in the game of life.
Consider whether or not the food you are eating will increase your energy level or deplete it. Is the food you are choosing, natural and filled with life energy or highly refined and filled with high levels of fat or sugar? Ask why you are eating at this moment. Is it because you are in need of sustenance, or are you bored or seeking emotional comfort by eating? Do you gulp down mouthfuls of food quickly and unthinkingly, or do you eat slowly, consciously and with gratitude for the life giving energy of your food?
The attitude and awareness you apply to eating and nutrition will have a huge impact on your health. Mindfulness empowers you to take control of your health, while mindless eating subjects you to the whims and negative emotions that come and go, sapping your power in the process. You always have a choice, so make it deliberate, not a whim.
The traditional prayer of blessing before a meal not only blesses all those sharing at the table, it can be a reminder to give thanks for all the blessings of daily life; for family, friends, food and for life itself.
Your attitude of universal gratitude and eating with mindfulness will nurture your body, mind and spirit. Love your body, feed it with loving mindfulness and you will live a healthy life. Enjoy your experience of life at the wonderful time in humanity's history, and as the Vulcan saying goes: "Live long and prosper!"
