People ask what is the best way to pray, and the answer to this question can be simple or complex according to our understanding of what prayer is all about.
A great spiritual Master once answered in this way: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be your name… Now I certainly do not intend to create another prayer, but to dive into the essence of this teaching of Jesus. Christian religion and spirituality is based upon this most famous of all prayers and it holds a key to the treasure chest of happiness.
Jesus would have us speak to the Divine as our Father in heaven. So as the essence of the Father must be in the offspring: we are heavenly beings, just as is our Father. We are spiritual beings, as is our Father.
Our faith's foundation is the knowledge that we are spirit manifesting in this physical body. Such understanding is fundamental to our self-identity, our spiritual consciousness, our relationships with others and with all creation. We discuss this holistic and integrative spiritual approach in some depth in the book, Holistic Wealth, a Guide to Creative and Joyful Living.
Prayer is the deliberate and heart-felt communication between our mind and spirit and our divine Source. Yes, it is that simple. The greatest discovery found in this divine communication, which permeates everything else, is the emotion and feeling of love. In prayer and meditation, we come home in spirit. That is why, when everything else may fail, we turn to the divine for help, for comfort and for guidance. It is innate within us that we know there is some grander purpose for our existence than just this physical, earthly life.
Hallowed be your name is for me, expressed in a familiar concept, my spirit running home to the arms of my Father, returning home to my Source. While some part of me is in awe and wonder, in my heart of hearts, I realize this Father, that I love so much, and my own spirit are indeed, one in essence. I do not speak to my Father, I rest in the Being of my Father. This is true prayer.
Based on our realization of our intrinsic oneness with our loving Father, the Creator and Source Energy of all life, we too, do what we see our Father doing. It is our mission in this incarnation to manifest, through our divine creative power, more new and amazing realities, just as does our divine Father. Prayer is therefore, both repose in Being and dynamic creation.
Our part in May your kingdom come is to expand this kingdom in the same way the Father has shown us, through magnificent and joyful creation. Yes, we are divine creators, and it is fundamental to our purpose to integrate spirit into physical creation and everyday life: Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. This is the dynamic part of holistic prayer.
Holistic prayer means integrating spirituality into everyday life, it means accepting the challenge of embracing our evolutionary growth; it is spirit-based living. Prayer, turning within to commune with our Divine Source, and prayer, manifesting as dynamic creation, is the most wonderful and loving place to be. All you need is love, love, love, sang the Beatles, all you ever need is love! Yes, we can ask for our daily bread, and we can ask for forgiveness and deliverance from all harm, as Jesus teaches in The Lord's Prayer, but there is one way to have it all. Integrate the spirit of prayer into everything you do, think and say.
Live in a spirit of love and have always an attitude of profound gratitude. This keeps you in harmony and contact with the Divine within, and draws you closer to the Source of all good. Live in this state of love and you will experience the ultimate happiness of prayer.
